This paper stems from a larger project involving a study of literary responses to death and the prospect of death in early medieval China. It is an examination of the very different texts and circumstances surrounding the deaths of two members of the Cao family, Cao Cao (155–220) and Cao Zhang (d. 223), and the construction and re-mediation of the relevant accounts.
