Abstract:
In this presentation, Yun Shen will give a general introduction to the studies of the history of ethnic groups in China. She will explore some of the main concerns of these studies, as well as provide a historical perspective on the origins and development of the 56 ethnic groups that are currently living within China’s territory.

Bio:
Yun Shen (沈芸) is a Ph.D. candidate at Yunnan University in China, and is currently a visiting scholar at The Ohio State University. Concurrent with pursuing her doctorate, Ms. Shen is also working for the International Office of Yunnan University, located in Kunming, Yunnan Province in China, a part of the country that is famous for its diverse ethnic cultures and natural beauty. Besides working in the field of higher education and internationalization, she has, over the years, been very interested in studying the history and culture of the ethnic groups in Yunnan, and hence chose to conduct her doctoral research on this topic, with focus on the history of the ethnic groups in Yunnan Province in the Qing Dynasty.
