Janet Yang


The China Society of Southern California, Harvard Club of Southern California and Penn Club of Los Angeles present prominent film producer, Janet Yang. She has produced movies like Joy Luck Club, Empire of the Sun, and the latest, Shanghai Calling. Ms Yang will speak generally about the exploding film industry in China, and its relationship with Hollywood, as well as her specific experiences and insights in making movies between the two places. She will compare what it was looking shooting Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun in the mid-80's, and her recent movie, Shanghai Calling, shot in many similar locations 25 years later.

Janet Yang holds a B.A. from Brown University in Chinese studies and an M.B.A. from Columbia University. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; a member of the Committee of 100, an organization of prominent Chinese-Americans; an advisory board member of Asia Society Southern California; and an advisory board member of CAPE, the Coalition of Asian-Pacific Americans in Entertainment. She has taught producing at the Sundance Institute and the Independent Feature Project. She is involved with a number of arts, community and political organizations.
