Family Day: Moon Over Manhattan! Celebrate Lunar New Year

Celebrate the Year of the Monkey!

Asia Society rings in the Year of the Monkey with performances and traditional craft activities inspired by Lunar New Year traditions across Asia. Activities will include a Lion Dance and kung fu demonstration, musical performances, and more.

Schedule of Events:

1:00-1:30 PM: Korean Drumming performance and lesson
NY Korean Traditional Marching Band will perform Salmulnori, which means “playing four things”: The changgo or hour-glass shaped drum; the buk or barrel drum; the jing or large gong; and the kkwaenggwari, or small gong

2:00-2:30 PM: Bo Law Kung Fu: Lion Dance and Kung Fu demonstration
New York Bo Law Kung-Fu martial arts school presents a traditional Lion Dance followed by an interactive Kung Fu demonstration.

3:00-3:30 PM: Chinese Theater Works: Music and Dance
Chinese Theater works wows with special performances featuring segments of the traditional opera piece “Monkey King,” with an opportunity to interact on stage with the performers.

The performance will also feature regional singing and dance from ethnic folk traditions, includes the Tibetan, Mongolian and Han music and dance.

Ongoing Arts and Crafts activities on the 8th floor:
--Stretch dragon puppet making with Chinese Theater Works
--Korean “lucky pouch” making
--Tibetan butter sculpture
--Clay monkey charm making with Syma
