Related Exhibition: Art of the Gift: Recent Acquisitions and Wind and Waves
Shirley Z. Johnson, a longtime friend of the museums and a scholarly collector, has amassed a significant collection of antique Chinese textiles. In recent years, she has branched into collecting objects of a very different medium and timeline: contemporary Japanese metalwork. In this talk, she explores the genesis of her collecting; contrasts her approach to collecting in each medium; and considers her research, archives, and conservation, and the various roles of collectors.
This is one of a series of talks examining collectors’ paths, held in conjunction with Art of the Gift: Recent Acquisitions.
