Image

Anami Yusuke is a Professor of modern Chinese political history and contemporary Chinese politics at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan. His main research topic is the militarization of local societies in China from the mid-19th century, and how that affected the outcome of the Chinese Revolution. He believes that it is crucial to reexamine the process of nation-state building in modern China in order to understand contemporary Chinese politics. (Professor, Department of Law, Tohoku University, Japan; HYI Visiting Scholar).

Chair and Discussant: Elizabeth Perry (Director, Harvard-Yenching Institute; Henry Rosovsky Professor of Government, Harvard University)
