Chinese Ink Painting

Dr. Kuiyi Shen is Director of Chinese Studies Program and Professor of Asian Art History, Theory and Criticism at the University of California at San Diego. His teaching and writing has focus on modern and contemporary Chinese and Japanese art.

For thousands of years, the ink tradition has been the quintessential Chinese expression by artists to depict their universe, and a highest achievement in Chinese art is in landscape and calligraphy rendered in ink on paper or silk. Yet in the 21st century, a few celebrated Chinese artists embraced by the international art world, work in various mediums - indeed they are known as international artists not just Chinese artists, but what makes the art Chinese? How has it evolved? Why is it international?

In this context,  Professor Shen discusses the major art genres of Chinese Art after 1989; the development and rise of contemporary ink painting ("New Ink") from a traditional art form to its contemporary spot light in the international art world, the major artists in this genre, as well as major developments that have contributed to the international recognition of this genre.  Last but not least, Professor Shen will talk about Chinese Art in the new millenium, and the factors supporting or inhibiting the growth and continued recognition of Chinese art.

Please RSVP by October 5, by replying to rsvp@chinasocietyofsocal.org or call Yvonne at (310)454-3621
