Chinese Companies in Latin America: Economic and Strategic Dimensions

In July 2014, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, and Cuba—his second trip to the region since taking office in 2013. He offered tens of billions of dollars in new loans and foreign direct investment (FDI), primarily in infrastructure and energy projects.

What is the existing and potential role of Chinese companies in the burgeoning relationship between China and Latin America? Other than the heavy investment in extractive industries and construction, what other sectors have attracted the interest of Chinese entrepreneurs? What difficulties or barriers have Chinese companies faced in the region, particularly in the mining sector, and has there been a learning process regarding how to operate on the ground?
