China’s International Petroleum Policy

This is the next event of the “SAIS Faculty Book Series” which will feature a discussion of China’s International Petroleum Policy, a book written by Bo Kong, director of the SAIS Global Energy and Environment Initiative and a SAIS graduate, recently published by Praeger.
 
Kong will make some introductory remarks, followed by a panel discussion about the book. Panelists include:
 
- Erica S. Downs, China Energy Fellow at the Brookings Institution
- David M. Lampton, director of the SAIS China Studies Program and dean of faculty
- Edward L. Morse (invited), managing director and head of Global Commodities Research at Credit Suisse and a SAIS graduate
- Michael Mandelbaum (moderator), director of the SAIS American Foreign Policy Program
 
Kong’s book is an exhaustive treatment of China’s international petroleum policy, examining the co-governance of China’s petroleum sector by its government and national oil companies as they work at loggerheads with each other to shape such key policies as overseas investment, domestic price caps and import controls in the face of their country’s exploding demand for foreign oil. Imported oil already accounts for half of China’s total consumption and is forecast to increase to 80 percent by 2030.
