Professor Garver will survey China’s efforts to manage conflicts between Middle East countries while expanding multi-dimensional cooperative relationships. He will focus on the Islamic Republic of Iran and its rivalry with Saudi Arabia. China’s efforts to expand access to energy resources vital to continuing economic growth while avoiding rivalry with the United States in the Middle East will also be explored.
John W. Garver is a professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Institute of Technology. He specializes in China’s foreign relations and Asian international relations. He is the author of nine books, several monographs, and over one hundred journal articles and book chapters dealing with China’s foreign relations. His books include: The Protracted Contest, China-Indian Rivalry in the Twentieth Century (2010); The Vital Triangle: China, the United States, and the Middle East (2008); China and Iran, Ancient Partners in a Post-Imperial World (2007); Face Off: China, the United States, and Taiwan Democratization (2000); and The Sino-American Alliance: Nationalist China and the US Cold War Strategy in Asia (1997). He is a member of the National Committee on US-China Relations and the US-China People’s Friendship Association.
