This symposium is an international gathering of scholars coming together to explore the artistic, political and cultural significance of Chinese gardens during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911). Held in conjunction with PEM’s special exhibition The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City.
The symposium, Artful Retreat: Garden Culture of the Qing Dynasty, is a collaboration of the Peabody Essex Museum and Harvard University's Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and the Department of History of Art and Architecture.
