Ai Weiwei: According to What? is a major solo exhibition featuring approximately twenty-five works made since 2000 by noted conceptual artist, architect, photographer, and curator Ai Weiwei (Chinese, b. Bejing, 1957). The exhibition, named after a painting by Jasper Johns, whose work was a catalyst for Ai’s entry into contemporary art, introduces viewers to the artist’s broad practice including sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific architectural installations, and aims to reveal the artistic, cultural, and historical contexts interwoven throughout. To offer greater insights into the artist’s ideas and attitudes, which transcend conventional notions of contemporary art, the exhibition takes three approaches to his work: “Fundamental Forms and Volumes,” “Structure and Craftsmanship,” and “Reforming and Inheriting Tradition.”
