Taiwan Pres. Ma Ying-jeou on Cross-Strait and US Ties, Followed by Los Angeles Discussion
Via video, Ma spoke to CSIS and other centers. His presentation and discussion was followed by analysis and commentary from Los Angeles and Taipei.
On April 9, 2014, USC again hosted a video presentation by Ma Ying-jeou, President of the Republic of China. The president spoke to and then interacted with Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Paul Wolfowitz, former World Bank president and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and Christopher Johnson, holder of the Freeman Chair in China Studies, all at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. Video of the presentation and discussion is available at Youtube and at the Office of the President website. Text of Pres. Ma's speech is available here. A transcript of the CSIS event is here.
Pres. Ma began by stressing the strong and productive ties between Taiwan and the U.S. He argued that, "Today, ROC-U.S. relations are the strongest they have been in 35 years or more. With U.S. support, Taiwan has been able to improve cross-strait relations and confidently engaged Beijing from a position of strength."
At USC, a number of scholars discussed points raised by the president and the dramatic spring events, including the occupation of the Legislative and Executive Yuan by students opposed to the cross-strait services agreement.
