On July 12, 2008, Mrs. Rita Lau was appointed as Hong Kong’s Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development. She is a seasoned civil servant with extensive experience in public administration.
As the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs. Lau’s policy responsibilities include, among others, external commercial relations, inward investment promotion, industry and business support, tourism development, development of information technology, telecommunications, broadcasting, film and creative industry, and innovation and technology.
Hong Kong has been ranked by Heritage Foundation as the world’s freest economy for 14 consecutive years. It is considered one of the most open and dynamic economies of the global community and enjoys a number of strengths, including a prized natural resource, its outstanding deep water harbor; virtually no public debt; a level playing field for all; and free flow of information and capital. In 2007, Hong Kong’s GDP expanded by 6.3 percent, driven by the growth of high value-added sectors, such as financial services, trade and logistics. Its surplus for fiscal year 2007-08 was $8.2 billion, attributed, in part, to a robust economy.
As an open economy and an international financial centre, Hong Kong is not immune to the impact of the current global financial tsunami. That said, its financial infrastructure is more robust than it was in 1997 and has greatly matured from the opportunities seized and the experience gained from the Asian Financial Crisis.
Please join us at a luncheon with Mrs. Lau for her economic and business update on Hong Kong.
