Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.

Four leading Chinese scholars from East China Normal University (Huadong shida) will lead a discussion on mentalities, thoughts and grassroots life in China. East China Normal University has been known for more than a decade as a powerhouse in the studies of culture, literature, and intellectual history. Professor Xu Jilin will discuss secular tends and spiritual life. Professor Chen Yingfang will discuss urban development, its crisis, and the livable space of mobile and migrant citizens. Professor Gao Ruiquan will discuss transitions and orientations in Chinese thought and mentalities. And Professor Luo Gang will talk about the grassroots imagination of intellectuals. Bring your questions and curiosities and these excellent scholars will clarify, illuminate, and offer the updated stories and messages from China's intellectual scene.
