The Taiwan Bangzi Company (formerly known as the Flying Horse Honan Opera
Troupe) will be making a special visit to Harvard University on Monday, April
11. Their performance will feature four scenes from classical Chinese operas,
including "Liang Shabo and Zhu Yingtai," "The White Snake Legend," "Picking Up
the Jade Bracelet," and "The Scholar Who Would Be an Official." Performing a
style of traditional opera which originated in China’s Henan Province and
remains loved on the Chinese mainland – the so-called “Bangzi” or Henan Opera –
this group came to Taiwan 58 years ago and since then has had an unbroken
history of performance, study and further development. Among the many forms of
Chinese opera in a broad sense, the Henan Opera is distinguished by its rather
dramatic or “extroverted” performance style as well as the musical
accomplishment using “bangzi” or clappers to indicate the rhythm. Led by Wang
Hailing, the “Queen of Bangzi Opera,” Taiwan Bangzi Company has a history of
international success.
