The USC U.S. – China Institute invites K-12 EDUCATORS to attend
EAST ASIA PRE 1800
A Professional Development Seminar at UTLA
September 28 to November 30, 2010

The USC U.S. – China Institute (USCI) and the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA) are offering a 36 hour professional development seminar for K-12 educators.
The seminar will be held at UTLA and begin on September 28 and end November 30, 2010. Enrollment is limited to 24 participants and priority will be given to high school world history and language arts teachers, though all K-12 educators are invited to apply.
Sessions will meet every Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and one Saturday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. For these meeting days, participants will be provided with parking and refreshments.

♦ Seminar Content
Focusing on helping teachers address the California history, social studies, and language arts standards, we will offer presentations on the history and culture of the region, as well as discuss how East Asian case studies can be used to explore a variety of issues.
Sessions include discussions of revealing primary source materials as well as literature and film recommendations.
Among the topics covered will be:
Geography / Premodern China, Japan, and Korea
(philosophy, social structure, key institutions)
19th Century Domestic and External Challenges
War, Revolution, and Nation-Making
Economic Development and Social / Cultural Change
Relations with the United States
21st Century Challenges and Opportunities
Web Research / Web Collaboration

♦ Seminar Benefits
Individuals who successfully complete the seminar and its follow-up requirements receive:
⇒ $200 in East Asian reference and teaching materials
⇒ $200 East Asia-focused resource materials for use in the classroom
⇒ $500 Stipend
⇒ Six USC Rossier School of Education Continuing Education Units (CEUs), processing fee applicable or Two LAUSD Salary Points

- A short 1-2 page resume (curriculum vita) that includes a list of your educational and work experience
- A letter from your school principal confirming your teaching assignment
- A refundable deposit check for $50, made payable to "University of Southern California," to hold your registration; the check will be returned to you at the conclusion of the seminar

♦ Seminar Requirements
1. Application: Along with a short resume, letter from principal, and $50 deposit check.
2. Attendance and participation: Participants should attend and actively participate in all seminar sessions. We will ask to complete an evaluation posting on the seminar web forum for each session
3. Reading assignments: We will be providing a selection of reading materials to be distributed on the first day of class. Participants will prepare for each session by completing the corresponding reading assignment. Much of what will be discussed in the class will be based upon the readings. Use the web forum to raise questions or discuss the readings with your classmates.
4.Web discussion forum: Each teacher is expected to actively participate in a seminar-focused web discussion forum. Located at http://www.uschinaforum.usc.edu,
5.Curriculum project
:
Participants will be incorporating the seminar experience into their own classes by working with seminar colleagues in developing a curriculum project. For this project each teacher will design a series of lessons to be used in one of the courses they teach

Reflect on the seminar experience in a 250-500 word essay.
