East Asia since 1800 (September 12 - November 28 2022)

This complimentary online seminar offers in-depth presentations on the history and culture of East Asia since 1800 as well as aids K-12 educators incorporate these learnings into their curriculums. All instructional materials and discussions are online. Two Saturday Programs (9/17 and 10/15) will be both in person at USC and via Zoom.


This program is sponsored by the USC U.S.-China Institute, the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, and the Japan Society. It is primarily intended for teachers in California and neighboring states though others may apply. The Saturday workshops are open to all teachers. Apply via the form below.

The online seminar includes:

  • Video presentations & readings
  • Mandatory online forum participation
  • Online discussions with an instructor


  • For LAUSD educators, 2 LAUSD salary points (no fee)
  • For all other districts, 6 Continuing Education Units (processing fee applicable)
  • Certificate of completion
  • Resources and materials

Topics include:

  • demographic change and the role of geography and the natural environment
  • Economic, social and cultural developments within East Asia
  • Exchange within East Asia and challenges imposed by the West
  • War, revolution and nation-making 
  • China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, North and South Korea, and Japan today
  • Tensions within and beyond the region
  • Evolving ties with the United States


This schedule includes the live online discussion sessions. Each one will have corresponding video lectures, reading assignments, and forum participation that will be accessible online ahead of time. Participants can miss up to three (3) sessions and still be eligible to receive the benefits by submitting makeup assignments. Please note that Saturdays count as two separate sessions.
