On April 1, 2001, the collision of a Chinese fighter jet with a U.S. Navy surveillance plane resulted in the death of the Chinese pilot and the emergency landing of the U.S. plane at a Chinese airfield. The U.S. personnel were held for eleven days before being permitted to return to the U.S. Bush spoke after meeting with them.
