This seminar is presented by Primary Source in Boston. There is an online orientation in June and July with face to face meetings July 27-29. The program is free and accommodations will be provided for teachers coming from more than 50 miles from Boston.
This exciting summer institute for elementary and middle school teachers will explore how Japanese have interacted over time with the natural world. Gain content and resources to expand lessons you already teach on topics such as haiku, the environment/water, earthquakes and volcanoes, folk tales, festivals, and daily life, using Japan as a case study.
Scholar-led keynote sessions will illuminate topics such as religion, gardens, artistic and literary expression, geography, and human-environment interactions- Teacher-led workshops will explore how to translate these topics into the K-8 classroom and how to tap into student interest in Japanese popular culture and cultural products
- View Japanese art, learn about the tea ceremony, and engage in discussion with visiting students from Japan
- Visual literacy, map-reading and close reading skills will be integrated throughout
Supported by the US-Japan Foundation, this summer institute will be held at Showa Boston, the U.S. campus of Showa Women's University in Tokyo, Japan, whose facilities include a Japanese teahouse and a Japanese-inspired garden.
