We are thrilled to announce that the IU East Asian Studies Center will be organizing an NCTA study tour to South Korea, Friday, July 21st to Sunday, August 6th, 2017 (tentatively). NCTA alumni of all sites with a minimum of 30 hours of NCTA professional development are eligible to apply.
The 14 day excursion will begin with four days in Seoul, followed by visits to three major metropolitan areas of South Korea: Busan, Gwangju, and Daejeon. The tour will also stop at Gyeongju, the historical capital of the Silla dynasty. The tour will include visits to notable historical and cultural heritage sites, Korean government offices, a temple stay, and, schedule-permitting, opportunities to interact with Korean teachers and students.

Eligibility requirements

You are eligible to apply if you:
(1) Have successfully completed a minimum of 30 hours of NCTA programming offered by any NCTA site.
(2) Teach about Korea as part of a formal teaching assignment OR demonstrate a commitment to incorporating Korea into your curriculum.
(3) Are a minimum of 5 years from retirement at time of study tour
(4) Have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience at time of study tour and intend to continue teaching for at least 3 years post-tour.
(5) Can attend the mandatory June 3rd -4th orientation
(6) Are in good physical health
(7) Have a high level of cultural sensitivity and respect for social norms and customs not your own.
**Please note: While applications from all NCTA alumni will be accepted, priority will be given to applicants who have never participated in an NCTA study tour.

The following will be paid by EASC:

§ Up to $200 of the travel costs to and from the required June 3rd-4th orientation meeting in Bloomington, IN, plus hotel and meals during the orientation.
§ Roundtrip airfare to South Korea (Incheon) from a major international airport (TBA).
§ Lodging, some meals, in-country activity fees, and travel expenses within South Korea.
§ Books, readings, and curriculum materials for all aspects of the study tour.

The following expenses will be borne by participants:

§ $850 toward the total cost of individual participation. This amount is due in two installments: $300 upon accepting a spot on the study tour (around Feb 15th, 2017) and the remaining $550 by March 20, 2017. *Please note: These amounts are **non-refundable**
§ Travel to and from your residence and the international departure airport (TBA)
§ Any additional cost associated with traveling to the orientation meeting, such as ground transportation to home airport, substitute coverage, etc.
§ Passport application/renewal fees (if necessary). *Please note: visas are not required for American citizens for visits to S. Korea shorter than 90 days.
§ Travel insurance.
§ Overseas medical coverage (Most HMO plans do not cover international travel, and many insurance plans offer very limited coverage. Applicants should check with their insurance provider for particulars. Coverage is often available as part of a travel insurance policy. Participants will be asked to furnish proof of medical insurance and a travel policy that includes emergency medical evacuation insurance or to purchase a travel policy that includes medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation insurance.)
§ Immunizations
§ Personal travel supplies and daily personal purchases (such as bottled water and snacks, some meals, laundry, international phone calls, etc.) and personal travel during free time or beyond the dates of the study tour.
§ Costs incurred by variation from the group airfare package, such as emergency return to the U.S. or return to the U.S. via a different route from the group package.
§ All participants are required to purchase Emergency Medical Evacuation Insurance at their own expense (approximately $50-$100 depending on policy selected).

The deadline for submission is February 5, 2017. Applications received after this date will NOT be considered.
