If You Build It They Will Come: a Brief History of Japanese Architecture in Philadelphia
Dr. Felice Fischer
Curator of Japanese Art and Senior Curator of East Asian Art
Philadelphia Museum of Art

The American taste for things Japanese, including architecture, grew out of the showmanship of World Fairs. The first authentic Japanese building on American soil was erected on the grounds of the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. This talk will explore the who, when, and how of the fascinating history of Japanese architecture in Philadelphia – including a Japanese Bazaar, a Temple Gate, a Teahouse, and a 17th century style Samurai Residence that almost came to Pasadena.
