This is a wonderful lesson for 3rd graders! I liked how you combined 3 topics, numbers, writing, and the New Year into your unit plan. If you have time, maybe you can even read a book about how the Chinese zodiac started? That's always a fun story to read.

The story in this book is in 8parts-China-China to America…mining…Building the Railroads and Success. The students-many of them immigrants can relate to the character(s) in the book. It is deeply personal, wonderful and heart-warming book to read in class. My favorite part is chapter VIII-pg. 105 because a great number of my students felt encouraged and inspired by the determination that comes with achieving ones goals- or the American Dream.
I am teaching 7th grade Teen Health for the spring semester and I came across this model of the human body and parts labeled in Chinese. I felt my students could benefit by learning or at least make an effort to learn and write health vocabulary in Chinese Characters. Since they are working on constructing their own model of the human body and basic systems as shown in this image and labels of the various body parts in Chinese characters. Student will be given a choice to draw/write the calligraphy and /or cut and glue pre-printed labels in Chinese.
