First to note: this is not my foreign language film review.
This is a documentary that I show my students each year in preparation for a mock trial. It's from 1996 and is narrated by Peter Jennings. I feel it does a great job of outlining why the bombs were dropped, what alternatives did the US have, and the aftermath in Japan. I have included the student viewing guide that I created for the documentary. If interested, the documentary can be found at http://www.amazon.com/Hiroshima-Why-Bomb-Was-Dropped/dp/B000060MVM.

Hiroshima - Why the Bomb was Dropped
The professor at one seminar I attended (a Russian specialists) stated that the bombs were dropped in order to scare the Soviets and basicly bully them into seeing who was the new and only "sheriff in town". To be more precise, to make the Soviets obey the Potsdam Agreements that required new East European governments. The Soviet and Allied perspective was one of "You conquer it, you rule it". Some in the audience were not amused. I had to respect his academic authority, but it sounded revisionist to some in attendance as to why the bombs were dropped.
Thank you for the great student viewing guide.
Wow, thank you for posting. I do debates with the history teacher every year as part of an interdisciplinary assignment, and this is one of the topics. This is a great resource to use in the classroom, and to especially, show those students who are assigned the debate of whether or not we should have dropped the bomb.
