Ip Man Film Review Ip Man is a retelling of a story of how one man inspired the Chinese people to rise up and defeat the Japanese after they invaded China. It opens in the village of Foshan. A village that was known for its Kung Fu schools and teaching. Master Ip did not need to have a school. He was wealthy, well respected, had a beautiful wife and son, and practiced Wing Chun on his own. Before the Japanese invade he is doing well. He is challenged by another Kung Fu master, but easily defeats him. When the Japanese invade, they take his house as their headquarters and Master Yip is made to work at anything he can get to survive. The Japanese realize this village is known for martial arts and begin offering a bag of rice if the Chinese man can beat the Japanese martial arts students. He is sent there and refuses to fight. When they kill two of his fellow teachers he must fight. He takes on 10 men and defeats them all. It is a pretty epic scene. He refuses the rice and goes back to work at a factory. The factory is attacked by another Chinese group band of thugs. The workers beg him to help them, so he teaches them all wing Chun. They practice and practice and become proficient. They stand up and defend themselves against the thugs. Meanwhile the Japanese General captures him and demands a fight with him one on one in a very public display. His friend on Ip’s request takes his wife and son and tries to leave. SHe begs him to go back and let her watch him defend himself and CHina. Ip ends up beating the Japanese General as his wife looks on, but is shot as he looks out in the crowd. The people revolt and crash through the police line and Ip and his family end up getting out alive and safe. They escaped to Hong Kong. It is said that he was the one that inspired the people to fight back and turned the tide of the war. China ended up pushing Japan out and took back their country. According to a website: Ip Man, also known as Yip Man, and also Yip Kaiman, was a Chinese martial artist, and a master teacher of Wing Chun.
