study tour 2008

NCTA alumni from USC, UCLA, and Stanford programs who have not previously gone on an NCTA study tour are eligible to apply for the summer 2008 tour organized by the USC U.S.-China Institute. The application for the tour will be posted at the K-12 Curriculum section of the USCI website by mid-October. The application deadline will be in early January.

I have attached the 2006 application as a sample of the sort of information applicants will be expected to submit. Applicants will be expected to submit two letters of recommendation from principals, assistant principals, or department chairpersons. The letters should address the applicant's skills and aptitude, including teaching effectiveness and ability to work cooperatively with others, and what the teacher has already done to take the ideas, methods, and materials introduced in the NCTA seminar to her or his students.

Tentative tour dates: June 28 - July 19
Tentative orientation dates: April 19-20 (participation is mandatory)
Tentative follow-up dates: September 13-14 (participation is mandatory)

At present, we hope the tour will include destinations in China and Japan. Because of the Olympics, however, it may not be possible for us to visit China. If that is the case, we will visit Japan and either South Korea or Vietnam. The tentative itinerary will be included in the application announcement in October.

The cost to participants for the tour will be $850. Those accepted will need to send a nonrefundable check for $600 to USCI by March 1. This will be used to book our plane tickets. The remaining funds will be paid in cash at the orientation weekend. They are used to "tip" our guides, drivers, and to meet other incidental expenses. The remainder of the $5,000 tour cost (including the two weekends at USC) is paid by a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation.
