The USC U.S.-China Institute invites K-12 educators to a special professional development program at the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Thursday, July 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., centered on the exhibition Fashioning Chinese Women: Empire to Modernity. Spanning the Qing dynasty through the 1960s, the exhibition explores how Chinese women used clothing and material culture to express identity, respond to changing social expectations, and navigate the profound transformations of modern Chinese history. Through a guided docent tour and collaborative discussion, participants will discover how fashion can serve as a compelling lens for examining history, gender, culture, and social change in the classroom.
Following the one-hour museum tour, participants will engage in a facilitated conversation about classroom connections, followed by a teacher sharing session to exchange ideas and instructional strategies. The program offers educators a unique opportunity to experience the exhibition firsthand while exploring innovative ways to connect its themes of fashion, identity, and social transformation to classroom teaching.
Attendees will receive free museum admission, complimentary lunch and parking, and a certificate documenting two hours of professional development.
