Where
he cave temples of Xiangtangshan, Mountain of Echoing Halls, are a cluster of Buddhist worship shrines carved into limestone cliffs in northern China’s Hebei province. Their sculpted Buddhist deities, architectural and ornamental details, and incised Buddhist scriptures were created with the support of the royal family and the advice of Buddhist monks. They are considered the crowning cultural achievement of the 6th-century Northern Qi dynasty and are understood to represent various religious concepts and cultural ideals of the time.
Currently many of the majestic sculptures from these caves are on view in a special exhibition, Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan, at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery (through July 31). Exhibition curator J. Keith Wilson, associate director and curator of ancient Chinese art at the Freer/Sackler Galleries, provides an intimate look at these devotional sites.
