Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Early American History
For Fifth Grade Public School Teachers in Los Angeles County

August 2 – 9, 2011
or
August 3 – 10, 2011

The Los Angeles County Office of Education is pleased to announce and co-sponsor the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Early American History for Fifth Grade Public School Teachers in Los Angeles County. The Institute is designed to prepare fifth grade teachers to teach American history under the guidelines of the History-Social Science Framework for California Public Schools and Content Standards. This intensive eight-day institute will immerse participants in early American history at places where some of the most important events took place. Teachers will study "on location" in Williamsburg, the restored capital city of eighteenth-century Virginia, Jamestown, and Yorktown. Instruction and interpretation will be provided by resident historians and by educators from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and other sites. Teachers will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with historians, meet character interpreters and take part in re-enactments of events of the eighteenth century.

Funded by private and corporate donations, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation will provide round-trip airfare, room (double occupancy) and board throughout the Institute. It is expected that teachers are able to work well as part of a team and will be teaching United States history in their district during the 2011-2012 school year.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 2011
Preference is given to teachers from public schools who apply in teams of two.
All other Grade 5 teachers in Los Angeles County are welcome to apply.

This program is offered to teachers nationwide. They have grants available to teachers from many states/areas. The grant program for teachers in the SF bay area is for a week long institute towards the end of June. They offer programs for teachers at the Elem,Middle, HS levels. A colleague attend several years ago. She said although it was very humid there, compared to California weather, it was a very worthwhile and applicable program.
