Does China Have a Stability Problem?

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China presents a roundtable discussion on China's public policies.

When:
February 27, 2009 2:00pm to 3:30pm
Print

At this CECC Roundtable, a panel of experts will discuss a key driver of public policy in China today: the Chinese government's concern with social stability. Amid the current economic downturn, and as a number of important anniversaries approach, official concern with public protest appears to be on the rise. How significant a challenge does ensuring stability pose to China today? How concerned should the United States be about stability in China? Will the Chinese government's concern with ensuring stability affect China's implementation of international human rights standards and the rule of law?

Panelists:

Bama Athreya, Executive Director, International Labor Rights Forum

Jacques deLisle, Stephen A. Cozen Professor of Law, University of Pennsylvania; Director, Asia Program, Foreign Policy Research Institute

Rebecca MacKinnon, Fellow, Open Society Institute and Assistant Professor, Journalism and Media Studies Centre, The University of Hong Kong
