China and the Republic of Congo Issue Joint Communiqué, June 20, 2006

During Premier Wen Jiabao's visit, China and the Republic of Congo issued a joint communique on June 19. Following is the full text:

The Joint Communique between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Congo

I. At the invitation of HE President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council of the People's Republic of China paid an official visit to the Republic of Congo from 19 to 20 June 2006.

II. During his visit, Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with President Denis Sassou-Nguesso and met with Prime Minister Isidore Mvouba. The leaders of the two countries exchanged in-depth views on furthering bilateral friendly relations and cooperation, as well as international and regional issues of common interests.

III. Both sides reached broad consensus and expressed satisfaction with bilateral relations that have been consolidated and developed since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1964. They would like to continue to maintain high-level exchanges, build up mutual political trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and bring benefits to both peoples in the principle of sincere friendship, equality, mutual support and common development.

IV. Both sides pledged to continue mutual support on issues involving national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Congolese side reaffirmed adherence to the one-China policy and opposition to any form of "Taiwan independence" including "de jure Taiwan independence". Congo opposes Taiwan to accede to any international or regional organization only for sovereign states and does not have any official relations or conduct any official exchanges with Taiwan. China highly appreciates such a position.

V. Both sides held that China and the Republic of Congo have huge potential for cooperation and are ready to strengthen cooperation in the areas of agriculture, energy, telecommunications, transportation, infrastructure construction and human resources development. The two governments will create necessary conditions and facility for the businesses of the two countries to enhance trade and investment exchanges.

VI. Both sides indicated that they will continue to enlarge cooperation in international affairs and commit themselves to safeguarding rights and interests of developing nations and promoting world peace and development. China appreciates the efforts of the Congolese side, especially President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, in promoting the affairs of the African Union, as well as the peace process of Sudan's Darfur, Cote d'Ivoire and the Democratic Republic Of Congo.

VII. Both sides made highly positive comments on China-Africa friendly relations and cooperation, promising that they will commit themselves to promoting a new type of China-Africa strategic partnership featuring political equality and mutual trust, economic win-win cooperation and cultural exchange. Both sides would like to strengthen consultation and coordination to make positive contributions to a successful Beijing summit of China-Africa Cooperation Forum.

VIII. Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed the invitation from Chinese President Hu Jintao to President Denis Sassou-Nguesso to attend the Beijing summit of China-Africa Cooperation Forum. President Denis Sassou-Nguesso accepted the invitation with pleasure.

IX. The Chinese side thanked the Ghanaian side for their warm reception and thoughtful arrangements during Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to the Republic of Congo.
